Big Data Learning Analytics with OpenACRE

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

The Open Analytics Collaboration and Research Environment (OpenACRE) is a robust and scalable big data learning analytics platform implementing the latest specifications of Caliper, an emerging standard for the generation and collection of learning data both within and without learning management systems. OpenACRE is a plug-and-play infrastructure provisioning its users with competence, confidence, and regulation insights and includes built-in learning tools and analytics solutions. OpenACRE leverages big data technologies such as Apache Spark and Kafka to cope with the challenges of receiving and processing continuously flowing streams of data from a variety of disparate learning contexts. In addition, learning data will be controlled and forwarded over the wire through Software-Defined Networking (SDN) to federate diverse server resources, optimize bandwidth, and prioritize transport of high-priority learning events. Moreover, OpenACRE is also extensible to add in-house and public educational applications available on the Internet.

In this workshop, we propose to do a thorough presentation of the OpenACRE framework which includes a high-level view of its architecture, a walkthrough of how a built-in learning analytics application called MI-WRITER (an application capturing and analyzing English writing) works on top of OpenACRE, and finally a live tutorial about how adding a new application that is not part of the built-in components and connecting it to available analytics solutions in order to get competence, confidence, and regulation feedback in a web application dashboard. OpenACRE will be available for free as an open-source solution to the research and education community at http://www.openacre.org.
